HMRC Updates

This post comments on a couple of technical HMRC updates.

First, businesses can now access their payments on account schedules directly through their VAT online account. HMRC are pushing this, but have confirmed though that ‘paper notifications’ will still be issued alongside this digital update.

In another interesting update HMRC issued a revised edition of its Customs Technical Handbook - Authorised Economic Operator (AEO). Providing enhanced procedural clarity for UK entities seeking AEO certification - a designation recognised internationally for demonstrating customs compliance and supply chain integrity.

AEO status is conferred upon businesses that meet stringent criteria across several operational domains:

  • Customs Compliance: Demonstrated adherence to customs regulations and procedures.

  • Record-Keeping Standards: Maintenance of accurate and auditable documentation.

  • Financial Solvency: Evidence of stable financial standing.

  • Security & Safety (AEOS only): Implementation of robust physical and procedural safeguards.

Achieving AEO status can yield operational benefits such as expedited customs processing, reduced inspection frequency, and reciprocal recognition by foreign customs administrations under mutual recognition agreements.
