Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

  • CBAM directly impacts businesses engaged in importing specified goods into the UK and supply chain participants linked to these imports. Sectors like construction, agriculture, and manufacturing should pay close attention due to potential increases in raw material prices and administrative burdens.

A key feature of CBAM is the import volume threshold. Under the EU model, importers are required to comply with CBAM obligations only if their total import volume exceeds 50 tonnes per year per product category. In the UK, the limit will be £50,000 per year by product category.

  • Carbon Cost Implications

CBAM mandates that imported goods be priced comparably to UK- produced goods in terms of emissions, ensuring a level playing field. This means many importers will likely see costs rise unless emissions are addressed.

    Data and Reporting Requirements

Businesses must account for the emissions embedded within their imported goods and submit verified reports to tax authorities. Failure to comply could result in severe penalties, significant reputational damage and exclusion from the Single Market and UK Internal Market.

    Strategic Advantages for the Prepared

Understanding and meeting the compliance requirements offers opportunities to gain competitive advantages in sectors preparing for significant change.

CBAM Explained

Navigating the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM): What UK Businesses Need to Know

CBAM is the UK's response to 'carbon leakage', a phenomenon where companies relocate production to regions with less stringent environmental standards. Scheduled to roll out within the EU from January 2026, and adopted by the UK from January 2027, CBAM places a carbon price on emissions-intensive goods imported into the UK, such as aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen, iron, and steel.
